President Joe Biden had nominated David Slaten Mill, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, for the position of Ambassador to Bangladesh. According to U.S. protocol, a nominee for the ambassadorship must participate in a Senate hearing before assuming office. As this hearing has not taken place, Mill's appointment to Dhaka did not proceed. Therefore, Tracy Ann Jacobson has come to Dhaka to carry out the ambassadorial duties until a new ambassador is formally appointed.
Welcoming her arrival, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka stated on Saturday, "We are thrilled to welcome our new interim Chargé d'Affaires, Tracy Ann Jacobson, to Bangladesh. Ambassador Jacobson, with extensive experience in diplomacy and previous ambassadorships in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kosovo, is dedicated to forging robust international relations. She eagerly anticipates leading the Dhaka Mission with diligence and foresight.”
In a press release issued on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy mentioned that Jacobson most recently served as a Senior Advisor at the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs in the U.S. Department of State. Before that, she was the Chargé d'Affaires, ad interim, at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Riga, Latvia.
Tracy Ann also held roles as the Dean of the U.S. School of Professional and Area Studies and as Deputy Director of the National Foreign Affairs Training Center.
